A few recommendations

1. Remember that nouns must be learned along with the article (la/el) and not on their own so that you will remember their gender right from the start. Then your next step should learn how to conjugate the verbs to be (SER/ESTAR), to have (TENER/HABER), to do (HACER), and to go (IR), in the present tense.

2. A preposition in Spanish may not necessarily correspond with the equivalent preposition in English, so you must learn which one is more likely to be used in each case. This is why you have to try to learn the verbs together with their prepositions, e.g. ir + a (go + to).

3. When learning verbs you should concentrate on just three tenses at first so as not to get overwhelmed. (Present, past, and future are grammatical tenses for getting started) You can start with the present tense and the most commonly used past tense, but for the future, I only recommend the immediate future initially, I’m going to be (voy a ser/estar), I’m going to have (voy a tener), I’m going to do (voy a hacer), I’m going to go(voy a ir). You will learn to recognize other tenses of course, but until you become reasonably fluent, it is better to stick with these.

Questions marks

It is also important to learn how to ask questions so that you can gradually build up your vocabulary.

Who?┬┐Qui├ęn?
What?┬┐Qu├ę?
Where?┬┐D├│nde?
Why?┬┐Por qu├ę?
When?┬┐Cu├índo?
Which?┬┐Cu├íl?
How much? ┬┐Cu├ínto?
How?┬┐C├│mo?
